By what paths does contemporary classical music become avant-garde, and how does Bartók renew it through popular music?

Dominique Pagani starts from problems of classification within classical music. He distinguishes two paths, even contradictory ones, by which contemporary music becomes avant-garde after impressionism. The first goes to fetch sounds that come from elsewhere but are ancient for humanity (Messiaen, Stravinsky). The second prolongs the dissolution of tonality found in Wagner all the way to Schoenberg's atonality. He connects the borrowing from traditional modal music to the awakening of nationalities, which produces national schools (Grieg, Dvořák). He arrives at Bartók, whose investigation into popular music gives rise to Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, and proposes comparing it to the scherzo of Berg's Lyric Suite, a pupil of Schoenberg.
