How can Niger's traditional music be preserved and transmitted while opening its musicians to other repertoires?

This report on musical life in Niger begins with griots and traditional ceremonies, which survive along with the music that accompanies them. It then presents the Centre de formation et de promotion musicale (CFPM), opened in Niamey in 1989 with support from the Lomé Convention. The director of the center, probably Dominique Pagani, points out a contradiction: sub-Saharan Africa is the region most musically motivated, yet it has the fewest music training institutions. He describes the orchestra-workshops, which bring together so-called modern musicians and so-called traditional musicians. The report ends with the instrument-making workshop, the sacred instruments, and the work of Mohamed Garba, who seeks to marry tradition and modernism. He concludes that an orally transmitted music, born in the street, can be learned in school.
