#3 Benefits and harms of amnesia...

#3 Bien-et Mé-faits de l'amnésie...

How do anamnesis and amnesia, individual and collective, work upon memory, and what does it mean for memory to be overdetermined?

Dominique Pagani starts from the scene of the Norns that opens Wagner's Götterdämmerung. The thread of fate breaks: this is the end of eternal wisdom and of fatalism, under the effect of Siegfried's free act. He draws a parallel between the Norns' uncertainty and the opening of In Search of Lost Time. He then follows the metaphor of the network and weaving up to the "troubled times" of the present and the threat of a war logic. He then distinguishes individual memory, where one recovers what one has known, from collective amnesia, which causes what was never known to be forgotten. He gives two examples: Bruno Guigue's text on the Western whitewashing of terrorism in Syria, then the article on Le Pen's dagger. He concludes by defining overdetermination from the Proustian scene of the evening kiss.
