Why is globalized, repetitive and binary music, broadcast everywhere since the 1950s, a music of enslavement and amnesia?

Dominique Pagani starts from an observation: for the first time, the same tunes are heard at night in Tokyo, Abidjan or Paris, meaning that popular musics have been liquidated. He distinguishes popular music "from below", the expression of a people and of a here and now, whose patterns Bach develops, from popular music "from above", manufactured by a producer to be memorized by everyone. He criticizes this second music for being frozen for 60 years in a flattened meter and a single timbre, in the service of an Anglo-Saxon master without history: it is amnesiac and amnesia-inducing. He contrasts it with jazz, born from the "singing off-key" of the C scale by African slaves, a miracle and a form of resistance that delivered 20th-century music from its impasse. He arrives, with Freud, at the link between repetition, inertia and death: the repetition of the same evacuates the difference that makes for life and the richness of memory.
