Are femininity and feminism compatible or different?

Dominique Pagani starts from a question raised by the audience and first examines its logical form: "compatible or different" is not the expected alternative "the same or different." He shows that feminism is a relatively recent movement, whose embryonic forms he traces in Molière and then in the struggles of the nineteenth century and the Commune, whereas femininity is as old as the species. He then distinguishes male and female, biological determinations given by nature, from man and woman, roles assigned by culture and history. These roles are not substantial entities, but millennia of prescription have produced a real femininity, which the media feminism of privileged milieus would like to erase. Reading Wagner's text on Elsa, the "true feminine" that liberates, and recalling Clouscard, he concludes: femininity and feminism are different but compatible, and a woman has the right to be feminine without being obliged to.
