How does Hegel, in his first philosophy of spirit, make the tool a power of spirit, and how does he draw from this an analysis of the division of labor, money, and civil society?

Dominique Pagani answers an audience question about the pin factory. He starts from memory and language, the first powers of spirit, and states that spirit is a historical matter opposed to natural matter. Descartes' piece of wax serves to show that naming and judging are activities of spirit. He then reads the passage where Hegel makes the tool the middle term between the worker and the object worked on: the tool gives labor its permanence and allows transmission, hence history. He arrives at the 1803 text on the pin manufacture, where Hegel describes the division of labor, the dulling of the worker, and money as a material concept, and concludes on civil society as a wild beast that must be tamed.
