Is the autonomy claimed today by those who go off to live in nature a freedom or a way of freeing oneself from humanity?

Dominique Pagani starts from a question from an internet user: it is the will to free oneself from nature that gradually led to civilization. He illustrates this thesis with the collective work of the Dutch who won their land from the sea, admired by Hegel. He then contrasts the autonomy of today's discourse with Kantian autonomy, itself taken from Rousseau. Following Rousseau, he distinguishes natural liberty, bounded by the individual's own strength, from civil liberty, limited by the general will. He finally connects contemporary returns to nature to the robinsonades criticized by Marx and to what he calls an unhappy consciousness of the upper-middle strata, as far back as Marie-Antoinette's hamlet at Versailles.
