Who is Wolmar in Julie, or the New Heloise, and thereby who is Julie?

A participant asks whether Wolmar, Julie's husband, is not the negation of the negation, the one who makes possible the continuation of love between Julie and Saint-Preux. Dominique Pagani starts from the emergence of a new erotic sensibility carried by the new middle strata, of which Suzanne and Figaro in Beaumarchais are figures. He then shows that Julie is Clarens: the incarnation of an ideal community that does not evade praxis, where the harvest festival comes after work. He traces the prefiguration of this world back to the third letter to Malesherbes. He concludes that Wolmar, aristocrat though he is, also belongs to this new world freed from prejudice, and embodies an evolution of mores in the social sense, which he contrasts with the "societal" issuing from '68.
