What Dominique Pagani says
Dominique Pagani approaches religion mainly through Marx and Hegel. With Feuerbach, he shows that the critique of religious alienation ends in a new alienation, nature, to which Marx opposes activity and praxis1. He treats religion as an ideology, an "answer given before the question"2. For him, the phrase "the opium of the people" names a force and is in no way reductive: religion is the consciousness of an inverted world3. He argues that secularism (laïcité) is the "truth" of religion in the Hegelian sense, that is, its fulfilment and at the same time its suppression. Communism would keep what binds people together and suppress the fantasised form, like the heavenly Jerusalem that comes down to earth. He also links religion to money, from the golden calf to the opposition between God and Mammon, and criticises a religion of nature4. With Hegel's Aesthetics, he follows how the sacred passes from presence to representation5. Finally, he draws on the Gospel of John, Genesis and Hölderlin, in whose work the modern poet's word takes the place of the religious within a collective.
