Do the common divisions between tonal and modal music, learned and popular, classical and jazz hold up to scrutiny?

Dominique Pagani starts from the piano keyboard: the white keys give the scale of C, the black keys the pentatonic scale. This distinction allows him to define tonality and modality, and to show that this difference is one of old and modern, not one of Europe and the rest of the world. He then refutes the idea that modal and traditional music would be simple and popular: Pygmy polyphony is as complex to analyze as a Bach fugue, and the learned and the popular run through every genre. He also dismisses the divide between improvised jazz and written classical music, since Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven improvised. He locates what is proper to jazz in collective improvisation on a double scale, the C mode and the blues scale, then ends with Bach, taken as an example of popular music with the finale of the Sixth Brandenburg Concerto.
