Why were the Khmer Rouge, communists, hostile to the Soviets, and what does their genocide reveal about the essence of evil?

Dominique Pagani starts from a question from the audience about the Khmer Rouge, "communist but resistant to the Soviets," which he links to the cycle on evil. He begins by recalling the deadly record of democracies since 1945 and the amnesia maintained by the media, which he seeks to correct by reorganizing the social frameworks of memory. He then places the Khmer Rouge within the Vietnam War and the Sino-Soviet tension exploited by the United States, then within the Cold War and the international anticommunist network (Sasakawa, the Anti-Communist League, Stetsko). He then reads the page of Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right on the freedom of the void, which becomes a fanaticism of destruction, and relates it to Rimbaud's Conte. He concludes with the massacres of Vietnamese, the end of the regime imposed by the Vietnamese army, and Western support for the Khmer Rouge at the UN, which he presents as an illustration of the essence of evil.
