What is meant by fascism today, and why is war its worst expression?

Dominique Pagani starts from an observation: fascism recruits in "the dustbins of the left," and Mussolini already spoke the language of revolt. He then poses a paradox: fascism is never as effective as when it does not appear as fascism. He therefore asks "what do you call fascism?" and draws on German and Italian history, with Buchenwald next to Weimar and nations unified late. He distinguishes two fascisms: a local, puritan fascism, and a globalized fascism, the libertarian liberalism conceptualized by Clouscard. He argues that the masks are falling today and that the worst manifestation of fascism, war, is being normalized by European heads of state. He concludes on the debt the right owes to the anti-communist left, and on a state apparatus put in the service of the private sector.
