Dominique Pagani approaches the philosophy of history through Hegel. In his view, Hegel resolves the aporia of the meaning of history by putting freedom in the place of meaning, and this meaning can fail1. He takes up Hegel's three stages, in which one is free, then some, then all, and draws a thesis from them: history extends to everyone what was once the privilege of a few2. He considers this conception anti-totalitarian and points out that Hegel's Orient is a historical metaphor with no racial meaning. He illustrates the cunning of reason through Napoleon: reason, which lacks existence, uses the passions of an ambitious man to create the modern state, then casts him aside34. Against Ecclesiastes and against the straight line of progress, he sets the spiral. With Jacques D'Hondt, he rejects the misreading of the "end of history"5. Faced with the health crisis, he distinguishes silent evolution and the qualitative leap from advertising "revolutions" and from reforms, which he calls counter-revolution6.
