What does Stanislas Adotevi show in Négritude et négrologues, and why does his critique of the essentialism of negritude disturb even more today?

Dominique Pagani begins from his biographical tie to Dahomey to introduce Adotevi and Hountondji, two Beninese philosophers wary of any essentialism of negritude. He takes up Adotevi's thesis: negritude was necessary at first as a founding myth and as the stake of a struggle for recognition, then it becomes a brake. Through linguistic and geographical examples (Gauls, Walloons, Gourmantché), he shows that identity is a relation and not a substance. He then analyzes the return of identitarianism and the self-interested origin of ethnology, from Pharaoh's scribe to Lévi-Strauss and the Tarzan films. He arrives at the rehabilitation of the universal against the "cursed triangle" of dominant ideology (man, the universal, progress) and, with Negroni, at a critique of development aid.
