Dominique Pagani approaches work through three authors whom he reads together. In Rousseau he finds the first thinker of work as a social relation. The praise of idleness on the Île Saint-Pierre is that of an outcast, and "every idle citizen is a rogue", a formula he considers more accurate than Proudhon's "property is theft"12. In Hegel's Jena texts, the tool becomes the middle term between the worker and the object: work gains its permanence in it, and history begins with it.
