Where would we want to remain: what does the quest for lodging, in Nerval's Promenades et Souvenirs, becoming a quest for a voice, reveal?

Dominique Pagani starts from Nerval's death, hanged in January 1855 after being refused entry to a night shelter, and from Hölderlin's question, "Where would we want to remain?", which he connects to Faust's pact and to the infinity of human desire. He then reads Promenades et Souvenirs, Nerval's last completed text, and follows the search for lodging from Paris to Montmartre and then Saint-Germain. This first part can be summed up by the alternative "nomad or settled", which he relates to the symbolic order of the seafaring man and the riverbank woman. Along the way, the quest for lodging turns into a pilgrimage, and the walker stops each time he hears a woman's voice, linked in the symbolic order to the bird and to water. He then superimposes on this text a passage from Les Nuits d'octobre, where a young girl's voice heard at Pantin leads to the obsession with loss, to the universal, and to the farewell, which he brings close to the farewell quintet of Così fan tutte. The second part, announced for the next session, will deal with the caravan, where one is "nomad and settled."
