#4.5 Angélique (by Nerval)

#4.5 Angélique (de Nerval)

Open on YouTube

Does Nerval's itinerary in Angélique owe anything to chance, and what is meant by chance?

Dominique Pagani opens the session with a tribute to Jean Salem. He then resumes the analytical reading of Angélique with the help of a map of the Valois. The aim is to show that Nerval's "local displacement," from Frankfurt to Paris then from Senlis to Ermenonville, is nothing haphazard. The text's dichotomies (Paris and countryside, ground that bears and water that gives way, horizontal and vertical) lead up to Rousseau's tomb, where the personal narrative gives way to a collective concern, the preparation of the Revolution. The drowning scene removed from Les Faux Saulniers, Sylvie, Aurélia, the Chimères and Hölderlin connect the vertical dimension to madness. He finally distinguishes two senses of chance, the absence of purpose and the absence of law, then, in response to the audience, natural law and social rule, and the relation between knowledge of laws and freedom.

About this session (in French)

Hommage à Jean Salem.
