9 #13 How can sciences of history be real?

9 #13 Comment des sciences de l'histoire peuvent-elles être réelles?

Open on YouTube

How can sciences of history have a rigor with nothing to envy in the hard sciences, and what does Wagner's Das Rheingold show on this subject?

Dominique Pagani starts from a sentence of Lévi-Strauss: Wagner is "the undeniable father of the structural analysis of myths." He thus uses the Ring as a model to show that sciences of history have a rigor of their own. He distinguishes the hard sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, governed by the cause-effect pair and by a transitive causality inscribed in time, from the sciences of history, governed by the sense-sign pair, where the sign is immanent to sense. He goes through the equivalence relation and the order relation, through Spinoza, Hegel and the organic totality. He then returns to the scene where the gold is piled up in front of Freia and draws out the "seed of the structure": the incompatibility of gold and love. He arrives at the thesis that love resembles, like nothing else in the universe, freedom, then presents the Forest Murmurs from Siegfried, placed at the middle of the tetralogy.
