Why does Frédéric Lordon, whose political battles deserve to be defended, read Michel Clouscard against the grain, and what does this reading reveal?

Dominique Pagani reads his postface to the reissue of Néo-fascisme et idéologie du désir by Michel Clouscard. He begins by acknowledging Frédéric Lordon's merits, both as a person and as a fighter: the critique of the European treaty, the rehabilitation of the principle of sovereignty, the capping of shareholder remuneration. He then situates him in the fray of the refounders of the left of the left, where Lordon presents Clouscard as a moralist critic of consumer society. He refutes this misreading by reading Clouscard: the proletarian's deprivation of consumption comes from the extortion of surplus value, and consumer society does not exist. To explain why Lordon loses his composure, he traces it back to the Atlanticist counter-offensive of the 1970s and to the human sciences, which were invented to ward off Marxism. He concludes on the civil war among the poor, on the prospective relevance of Clouscard, and on an invitation to read him more calmly.
