La religion de l'Argent

Why is money, the most vile thing there is, so close to the sacred, and how can we get out of this religion of money?

Dominique Pagani starts from true poverty and true wealth: with Rousseau, the gold of the broom flowers is a gratuitous luxury that cannot be taken from anyone. He then gathers material on the ambivalence of money, at once the most elevated and the basest thing: the soiled fetish of societies without writing, the analogy Mallarmé draws between verbal exchange and monetary exchange, Moses's golden calf, Freud's comparison between money and excrement. With Nerval's Sylvie and the opposition between God and Mammon, he distinguishes an old world, where money can do everything, from a modern world where other values appear. He then explains surplus value in Marx, which comes from a minus, and commodity fetishism. The exchanges with the audience concern the value of the artwork, usury, the state and the state apparatus. They lead to a critique of the religion of nature: there is no such thing as "man in general," there are social classes and a capitalist management of the planet, and he concludes with Rousseau's prophecy of the "century of revolutions."
