Why has aesthetics become a necessary part of the corpus of philosophy?

Dominique Pagani resumes the sub-chapter devoted to the relation of aesthetics to the political. He begins by reading a passage from Hugo's Les Misérables, "The Wave and the Shadow," where a man's drowning becomes a metaphor for the "social night." He then turns to aesthetics proper as a philosophical field. He dates the appearance of the word, then recalls Kant's distinctions (analytic and synthetic judgments, hypothetical and categorical imperatives, the domains of nature and freedom separated by an abyss). He shows that the Critique of the Power of Judgment throws a bridge across this abyss through reflective judgment, of which aesthetic judgment is the model: pleasure taken in the beautiful refers back to an unconscious desire, so that the beautiful object informs the subject about himself. With Hegel, the little boy who throws stones into the stream enjoys the spectacle of his own activity. The audience's questions lead him to the passage from nature to man, to the distinction between dialectical materialism and naturalism, and to Greek technè, which does not separate art from craft.
