What does Kant's reflective judgment teach us about the relation between the beautiful object and the subject's desire, and how far can art lead?

Dominique Pagani resumes the previous session: with reflective judgment, Kant shows that the beautiful object reveals a desire I was not conscious of, according to a "finality without representation of an end"; he illustrates this with Julien Gracq and the preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray, where art is "both surface and symbol." He then answers questions from the audience: the distinction between analytic and synthetic judgments, illuminated by Kant's formula that philosophy proceeds by concepts and mathematics by construction of concepts; then the passage from the natural order to the anthropological order, which he reads with Rousseau and Balzac as a passage always underway between the empire of necessity and the kingdom of freedom. He shows that Kant, with the sublime, sees the subject behind the object but "draws the curtain" on what stirs beneath the surface. The reading of Hölderlin's "German Song," and of "To the Poets," shows the poet seeking measure in the face of excess and naming the spirit of the homeland. He arrives at the impasse of the aesthetic field in modernity: representation presupposes an absence, hence the lead of the relation between art and praxis. A final question leads him to the influence of Newton and Hume on Kant.
