#5.2 bis FaceBookLive / Questions (1)

What place belongs to the concept of end (telos) in the novel of formation and in the Hegelian-Marxist conception of history, and how do negativity and death relate to freedom?

Dominique Pagani begins from a question from the audience on the novel of formation, from Rousseau's Émile to the Phenomenology of Spirit, and on the telos that orients it. He shows that teleology has become a taboo of post-modern thought, then distinguishes two finalities: Aristotle's external finalism, which the scientific revolution rightly criticized as an alienation, and the end proper to the human subject, which Hegel rehabilitates and which Marx illustrates through the architect and the bee. An end only makes sense between God and the pebble, for a finite subject, and the sense-sign pair must take over from the cause-effect pair in the human domain. He then answers questions left open at the ENS by reading Hegel on negative freedom, on language which annihilates the thing, and on 'man is this night.' He arrives at the idea that death, far from paralyzing, opens through the detour of praxis and the cunning of reason a world produced by man, which fights the dullness of repetition.
