How can philosophy, which hesitates between the rigor of mathematics and the language of poetry, take the subject into account?

Dominique Pagani opens the fall cycle with the theme of hesitation: speaking of the looming war or taking refuge in reverie. He recalls that philosophy shares with science the requirement of universal and necessary statements, against opinion, but that it must reach them in natural language, which is equivocal, because its object is the subject ("know thyself") and not things. The subject is itself in contradiction: one part wants to know, another does not want to know. He illustrates this hesitation with three poems: Hölderlin's L'Ister, between the shadow of the Black Forest and Greek light, a text by Mallarmé on the need to act and to write, then two poems by Baudelaire on autumn and twilight. He concludes that philosophy is situated between mathematics, poetry and politics. Questions from the audience lead him to distinguish understanding and reason, to criticize dogmatism and the indictment of technology, then to address the tendential fall in the rate of profit and the crisis of democracy.
