In what sense is speech "the best and the worst of things," and how does this contradiction reappear in Hegel's Greater Logic and in the relation between philosophy and history?

Dominique Pagani opens this session of answers to questions, the first online session of the season, returning to the theme of the cycle: words and language. He comments on Aesop's phrase by distinguishing language, a language (system), and speech, the only actual one, and finds in it a contradiction: he does not put language on trial in favor of other modes of communication. Starting from a request for a commented reading of the Greater Logic, he situates this work within the Hegelian system, a "circle of circles" figured by the spiral: logic, nature, spirit. He arrives at the absolute idea, which Lenin judges to be both the most idealist and the most materialist passage in Hegel. A question about analyses of fascism then allows him to distinguish the historian's documentary knowledge, of which Chapoutot is the example, from the philosophical judgment on the essence of Nazism, with the case of Heidegger. He ends by reading a comment on the place of music and Nerval in his work, which will open the next session.
