How does Hegel's aesthetics, centered on the figure of Antigone and on classical art, allow us to think tragedy, finitude, and the avant-gardes of modernity?

Dominique Pagani answers two questions from readers of his book « Féminité et communauté chez Hegel ». He starts from Antigone, the only work to which Hegel grants a timeless value. Against the anachronism that turns her into a figure of the revolted individual, he shows that one community, that of the bond of blood, stands against another, the city: this is what makes for tragedy. He then comments on the passage from the preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit on the understanding, death, and "beauty without strength," which recoils before the negative and shuts itself in a narcissistic impasse, like the animal in Kafka's The Burrow. He finally shows that classical measure is not a comfortable middle ground, and that the division of art into symbolic, classical, and romantic art makes Hegel the first theorist of the avant-gardes. Poe, Baudelaire, and Hölderlin serve as proof: modern man "knows too much" to represent the absolute in an external form.
