How can we read Hölderlin, given his contradictory receptions, and what does his poetry matter to communist militants?

Dominique Pagani begins from the contradictory receptions of Hölderlin, from the poet appropriated by Heidegger and the Nazis to the friend of the French Revolution for whom "Sophocles is republican." He situates German idealism and romanticism against the background of an unhappy consciousness born of the disappearance of transcendence, and distinguishes the reactionary Novalis from Hölderlin. A close reading of the elegy Bread and Wine shows that he does not make night an absolute: night is the time of waiting, between the Greek day of a collective reserved for a few and the return of a collective extended to all, following a periodization of history that is Hegel's. Answering a question on the usefulness of poetry for militants, he makes the psyche, with Clouscard, the dotted line that keeps the memory of the collective. He reads Mnemosyne and Germania against the Heideggerian interpretation and concludes on the right to be sentimental.
