Under what conditions is a discourse scientific, and how does science turn into scientism when applied to the human world?

Dominique Pagani continues the "geopolitical metaphor": after Aristotle's philosophical imperialism, he takes up scientific imperialism. He recalls the three conditions of a scientific discourse (a proper object, universal and necessary laws, experimental verification through measurement) and finds them in Max Planck's definition of physical law, whose caution he underlines, with support from Hume on the illegitimate leap of induction. With Galileo and Descartes, he shows the birth of scientific physics against Aristotle's finalist physics, then locates in the "long chains of reasons" of the Discourse on Method the scientist temptation: reducing everything to determinism. D'Alembert's Preliminary Discourse, linked to English ideology and the rise of the bourgeoisie, radicalizes this abolition of the subject; he shows its reductive character in the passage from instinct to institution, with the example of the meal. The answers to questions concern Clouscard, from whom he reads "The Country House," and colonialism and neocolonialism.
