What should be understood by work, and by the right to work, from La Bruyère to Marx, by way of Rousseau and Hegel?

Dominique Pagani starts from a text by La Bruyère on peasants to argue that the abstract concept of work must not conceal the worker. He then shows, with Rousseau, the first thinker of work as a social relation: the praise of idleness in the fifth walk does not prevent work from being a duty of social man, and Émile sketches the definition of alienation. With Hegel's First Philosophy of Spirit, the tool becomes the middle term in which work has its permanence and through which history begins. He finally reads Marx's note on the realm of necessity and the realm of freedom, whose condition is the reduction of the working day, which leads him to criticize degrowth discourse as objectively complicit with an employer class bent on layoffs. Questions from the audience extend the discussion to social class, ecology, pauperization in Hegel, and the organization of production.
