What is evil, if one starts from Rousseau's distinction between the state of nature and the civil state?

Dominique Pagani answers three questions from the audience. The first leads him to chapter 8 of book I of the Social Contract: the passage from the state of nature to the civil state develops human faculties and ennobles the passions, but its abuses can degrade man below the animal. He draws from this a definition of evil: the unnatural reintroduction of the state of nature by a being who has entered the civil state. He illustrates this with Leopold II's Congo, Nazism and Gaza, then supports it with the Kantian distinction of the two domains and with social determination, which can be changed. The second question leads him to the structural continuum between the myth of Theseus and that of Tristan, and to the discontinuity of Christian mad love. The third, on dialectic, leads him to restrict internal contradiction to the subject and to contest that the notion of nature adds anything to that of matter.
