What is the object of human desire in our modernity, and who is its subject?

Dominique Pagani continues the ongoing account of mondanité, a concept proper to Clouscard, which he situates in the Marxian gap between productive forces, relations of production, and superstructures. He poses the question of the object of desire and situates "our" modernity at the end of the eighteenth century, between the English industrial revolution and the French Revolution. With Turner, money in Hegel, and Goethe's Faust, then through readings of Senancour's Oberman, Baudelaire's Le Spleen de Paris, and Chateaubriand's René, he shows that the object of modern desire is characterized by its indetermination: an infinite desire, a contradiction internal to the subject, a voluptuousness of melancholy. The shepherd's song and Hölderlin's hymn lead him to the question of the collective and the individual, which he addresses in his answers to the audience: the collective exiles itself into interiority in order to return extended to the universal. He then takes up Girard, Adorno, the definition of the proletarian, Sève, Althusser, and the Tätigkeit, concluding that praxis gives material form to the infinity of human desire.
