How can reason, which has essence but not existence, produce a world, and why must it resort to cunning for this?

Dominique Pagani starts from the meanings of the word reason (ratio, logos, relation) and from the Kantian distinction between understanding, which knows what is, and reason, the faculty of ends, which concerns what is not there. Because reason has essence without existence, it must resort to cunning, that is, make use of what already exists. The example of Napoleon, unconscious instrument of the modern state and of freedom, shows the mechanism. He then moves to Hegel's Jena texts: the "night of the world" of the image, then the instrument, an existing and rational middle term, in which labor finds its permanence. From this he draws that man's weakness, from the myth of Prometheus to surplus value in Marx and to premature birth, is what constitutes his strength. Questions from the audience extend the reflection toward collective surplus value, the third term between two contraries, and colonization as a cunning of reason.
