#4.4 Angélique (by Nerval)

#4.4 Angélique (de Nerval)

Open on YouTube

What does the comparison of Angélique and Aurélia reveal about the evaporation of the real into surface, about the notion of edge in Nerval, and about the possibility of a determinism of human affairs?

Dominique Pagani starts from a comparative reading of Angélique and Aurélia: in the scene of the girls of Senlis, the real evaporates and only a symbolic function remains. He deepens this result through the concept of surface (the gold of the sea at sunset, the flayed figure, the screen), then through the Kantian phenomenon, distinguished from appearance as the whole of appearance referred to a subject, and through the difference between error and illusion. He then returns to the text of Angélique to draw out the notion of edge and frontier, conceived by Nerval as a perilous space, which he traces through poetry, opera, mythology and painting. From this he draws the ambition of refounding the human sciences on the idea of a determinism proper to human affairs, distinct from natural determinism because it can be undone. Questions from the audience lead him to geopolitical marches and then to the overall meaning of the novella: a passage from Odyssean repetition, tied to the mother, toward the liberation symbolized by Rousseau's tomb.
