The Music of History

La Musique de l'Histoire

What does music teach us about the history of peoples, once we have defined what is properly musical in music?

Dominique Pagani begins by rejecting an approach: the definition comes at the end, and tracing things back to their origins is an illusion, as shown by jazz, the word bureaucracy, or the African griot, who is at once musician, historian, and genealogist. Using Aristotle's definition by genus and specific difference, he then draws out the determinations of music: an almost immaterial art, an art of time opposed to the arts of space, an art of time without figuration, moving from noise to sound. From this he derives the thesis of a music of history: constant meter re-spatializes music, and the return to baroque as well as rock express the same need for reassurance, while the break between the quartets before 1789 and Beethoven makes the French Revolution audible. Through Racine and Freud, he shows that expression says more than what the creator thinks, and that shared pleasure reveals common desires. Questions from the audience lead him to musical anticipation, natural and cultural grids, the distinction between rhythm and meter, a critique of innateness, Adorno, and oral transmission in Africa.
